Hamburg (dpa / lno) - In Hamburg and Bremen, most bicycles were stolen in the Corona year 2020 in a nationwide comparison.

Measured by the theft rate per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the survey, with 789 stolen bicycles, Hamburg now ranks second after Bremen (876) and relegates Berlin (752) to third place.

The national average is 314 stolen bikes per 100,000 inhabitants, as the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) announced on Friday.

Last year, 14 577 bikes were reported as stolen in Hamburg. This corresponds to an increase of 20 percent compared to the previous year. According to the police, thieves had more opportunities during the corona pandemic in the Hanseatic city, as they said when the crime statistics were presented in April. In addition to Thuringia (+16 percent), the Hanseatic city is one of the federal states with the highest increase within a year.

According to crime statistics, 260,000 bicycles were stolen nationwide, around 5,000 fewer than in the previous year.

According to the GDV, fewer bikes were left unattended outdoors during the Corona period because people stayed at home more often.

The amount of damage in 2020 was unchanged at 110 million euros, mainly because more e-bikes are reported as stolen, which are more expensive than a normal bike.
