Ribnitz-Damgarten (dpa / mv) - An 80-year-old woman from Ribnitz-Damgarten (Western Pomerania-Rügen) has lost 13,000 euros to fraudsters.

As a police spokeswoman said on Thursday, the pensioner fell for a so-called grandchildren's trick on Tuesday.

A caller stated that she was the 80-year-old's granddaughter and needed 23,000 euros for a quick home purchase with a cheap discount.

When the elderly woman said she only had 13,000 euros in the house, but that should be enough.

The caller promised to transfer the money back immediately and directed an alleged notary to the phone.

He called the 80-year-old several times to prevent her from making contact with others.

An hour after the first call, a man was there as a "messenger", took the money and left.

Only then did the elderly call her real granddaughter and the fraud was exposed.

The police warned again of such scams, similar calls had meanwhile also become known from Marlow, a few kilometers away, and from Neustrelitz.

In 2020, fraudsters stole almost two million euros in this way in the northeast.
