The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Germany had "accumulated hostile stances that violate the higher interests of the Kingdom." The ministry enumerated 3 levels of these positions, on top of which Rabat said was Germany's negative stance on the Western Sahara issue.
The ministry stated that "the hostile stance of Berlin came in the wake of the US presidential declaration that recognized Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara."
The Moroccan authorities stated that the second reason for their decision to recall their ambassador in Berlin is that the German authorities revealed sensitive information provided by the Moroccan security services to their German counterparts, in the file of the prosecution of a former convicted of terrorist acts.
The Moroccan Foreign Ministry statement stated that, in addition to the above, Germany "continues to fight the regional role played by Morocco, specifically in the Libyan file, by trying to exclude the Kingdom without justification from participating in some regional meetings devoted to this file, such as those held in Berlin." , In reference to the international conference on Libya held in Berlin in January 2022.
In early March, Rabat announced the severance of its relations with the German embassy in Rabat and the German donor organizations, "due to deep differences concerning crucial issues."
Reuters quoted a high-ranking Moroccan diplomat as saying that the matter is linked to Berlin's position on the Western Sahara file.
