Berlin / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The northeast is catching up with fast Internet.

At the end of 2019, 11.7 percent of all households in the country had a connection to gigabit fiber optic cables.

That was fifth place in a comparison of the federal states, as can be seen from the “Germany Index of Digitization 2021”, which the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems presented on Thursday in Berlin.

Compared to 2017, the connection rate in MV has grown by 8.3 percentage points - more than in any other federal state, as it was said.

Hamburg (71 percent of households) is best equipped with fiber optic cables, followed by Schleswig-Holstein (26.3 percent), Bavaria (15.5) and Saxony (12.4).

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania comes in fifth.

Digitization Minister Christian Level (SPD) said: “This study is just moving towards the fact that today it is no longer about the expansion target of 50 megabits / second.

For the increasingly widespread applications such as video telephony and conferences, uploading data to clouds and web-based applications, we need a gigabit supply. "

The future technology of fiber optics is necessary for this.

"That is why we in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania rely exclusively on this from the start with the subsidized broadband expansion."

More than 1.8 billion euros are available in the country for this.

When it comes to internet coverage overall, however, MV is not yet that far, admitted level. “The expansion in a sparsely populated area like ours is much more time-consuming than in densely populated areas like Hamburg, Berlin or North Rhine-Westphalia. But we're gaining the fastest. " All over the country, excavators turned to lay more cables. "In a few years, all eligible households - that is more than 320,000 households, especially in rural areas - will be connected to the high-speed fiber optic network," the minister promised.

Bavaria (75.3 percent), Rhineland-Palatinate (74.0 percent) and Hamburg (71.6 percent) formed the top group among the federal states with a particularly high proportion of citizens who use the Internet on a daily basis.

According to the index, Brandenburg (57.6 percent), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (57.0 percent) and Thuringia (56.0 percent) came out on top.
