Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The open leadership question in the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU is motivating more and more Christian Democrats to position themselves for a personnel repositioning.

The state chairman of the Junge Union (JU), Johannes Winkel, told the "Rheinische Post" that he would be happy if, with Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst, "a former state chairman of the JU also became head of the CDU."

The 45-year-old has shown how a generation-fair policy can be implemented with new ideas.

It is expected that Prime Minister Armin Laschet will relinquish the state chairmanship, after he has meanwhile also led the CDU federal chairmanship in addition to the Prime Minister's office and has been proclaimed candidate for chancellor of the Union.

The 60-year-old has not yet announced this in public.

On Monday evening, the state board of the NRW-CDU meets in a digital session.

Formally, it is about the organizational preparation of the party congress of the CDU state association with the largest number of members, as well as the assembly that has to resolve the NRW candidate list for the federal election.

It is still unclear whether the state board will initially only set the dates and the form of the event on Monday or whether it will already set the course for a possible personnel repositioning at the top.

In addition to Wüst, North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul is mentioned as a possible successor to the party leadership.

However, the 68-year-old advocates not making hasty decisions, but rather waiting for the result of the federal election on September 26th.

That would keep all options open to Laschet in NRW if the chancellorship mission should fail.

Other Christian Democrats, on the other hand, are calling for clarification quickly.

Everyone agreed that a fight for Laschet's successor in the party leadership and, if necessary, in the office of prime minister should be avoided.

"I don't know anyone who says: We should take the process of the Chancellor candidate election as a model when it comes to the question of the state chairmanship," also emphasized JU state chief Winkel.
