05 May 2021 In the over 80s, the complete vaccination cycle reduced the incidence of hospitalization for Covid-19 by 91%. These are the data on the effects of the vaccination campaign in the age group of over 80 presented by the president of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti, by the councilor for Health, Alessio D'Amato and by the director of the Lazio Epidemiology Department, Marina Davoli. Lazio is the first region to study the effects of vaccines on the population.

In the run-up to vaccine availability, from February to December 2020, nearly 172,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection occurred in the region. About 8% of the infections reported during that period occurred among those over the age of 80. This population is a primary target for vaccination policies. In fact, almost 28% of all hospitalizations for Covid-19 occurred in the Lazio Region and over 58% of deaths are attributable to this age group.

This analysis focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of vaccinations in reducing hospitalization for Covid-19 in the population aged 80 or over, based on data available as of 21/04/2021. The analysis was conducted on patients from the Lazio Region who completed the Pfizer (87%) or Moderna (13%) vaccination cycle in the period 08/02/2021 - 15/04/2021. The incidence of hospitalization for Covid-19 in vaccinated people was compared with the incidence observed in a "control group" consisting of unvaccinated people. In total, 179,713 people aged 80 or over who had completed the vaccination course were followed, compared with an equivalent number of "controls".

In the group of people with a complete vaccination course, 27 hospitalizations for Covid-19 were observed compared to 290 observed in unvaccinated people. In subjects over 80, the efficacy in clinical practice of the complete vaccination course with Pfizer or Moderna in reducing hospitalization for Covid-19 was greater than 91%. The vaccination made it possible to avoid 267 hospitalizations for Covid-19, equal to a total of 3,840 days of hospitalization, in a median observation period of only 21 days. Continuous monitoring of the vaccinated cohort will also make it possible to evaluate the long-term efficacy of vaccination in terms of reducing mortality, as well as the duration of protection attributable to vaccination.

"The audience of over 80s in Lazio is 400,605. To date we have had 345,776 subscriptions, of which 28 thousand are home-based. It is an important result, of great adherence to the vaccination campaign". Thus the regional councilor for health, Alessio D'Amato, commented on the effects of the anti-Covid vaccination on over 80. "The first dose was administered at 92.06% and the second 75.5% - he added - an important result that led to a reduction in the rate of hospitalization and in lethality ".

Zingaretti: "Data confirm the right choice for over 80"

"This study is a piece of the Covid-fighting strategy that we have implemented in our region. What we heard tells us we were right. We had to start and focus on those who not only risked getting Covid but were more likely to die than others. ". This was stated by the president of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti, on the occasion of the presentation of a study on the effects of anti-Covid vaccination in the over 80s. "It was a great bet that we won - he added -. Thanks to this choice of camp far fewer people will die. We will have a different summer in which if we continue like this, even with the virus circulating, we can have a lower death curve and fewer hospitalizations than last year. It does not mean that we have won the battle, but we are on the right way. What will allow us to win the battle at Covid is not the demagogy of free all or useless masks, but resorting to science, centers of excellence and studies ".

"If we run with the arrival of vaccines, I think that" herd immunity "is a goal that can certainly be reached quickly" explained Zingaretti, speaking at 'Agorà' on Rai 3. As for the possibility that Lombardy is the first Region to achieve herd immunity, he added: "I hope so, we must stop this competition." "The rate of contagion is falling and the deaths are falling also because there is a curfew, also because we have understood that we must tie the removal of some measures to reduce infections "said the governor.

At the press conference, Zingaretti also explained that "by mid-May also Lazio will open the RSA to visits from relatives, following the recommendations that have been given". At a press conference, the governor then confirmed: "Saturday I will do the AstraZeneca vaccine, it is a sign of hope that must be given".
