The care giant Attendo has recently attracted attention when senior managers received million bonuses at the same time as the company received state support.

Attendo has also been criticized for its actions towards whistleblower Stine Christophersen, who is now about to get a new law that clarifies the whistleblower protection for private employees named after him.

Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) wants Attendo to report what state support they have applied for and what the money has gone to, as well as how the company has handled its staff and what conditions the employees had to act as the company outwardly claimed they did.

- When you run a company in the welfare sector, not least in elderly care, where you partly use tax money, partly affect life and health, you must be transparent, says Lena Hallengren in Morgonstudion.

Lacks support in the Riksdag

The Minister believes that the Social Democrats' attitude to companies that use tax money for other than raising quality or wages is well known, but that there is no support in the Riksdag to change it.

Private companies have the right to distribute bonuses, right?

- Yes, that's legally correct.

But if it's reasonable to pick out profits from tax-funded business and hand out million-dollar bonuses to executives, that's a different matter.

She believes that Attendo's bonuses, and the limited transparency in how money is used and how the business is run, can affect confidence in welfare companies in general.

- It is very difficult to go in and check when we do not have the same insight into private care companies (as in public red note).

That is why it is important that Attendo puts the cards on the table.

The Minister of Social Affairs welcomes a debate on whether Sweden should allow private companies, where transparency is limited, to conduct activities within school, care and nursing.

- Running a welfare company is not like running any company, it means a very big responsibility, says Lena Hallengren.

SVT has sought Attendo who declined participation in the Morning Studio.
