Zwickau (dpa) - With an investment of millions, the car maker Volkswagen has expanded the press shop of its Zwickau electric car factory.

74 million euros flowed into the expansion, according to the company, one of the largest single investments at the location.

The new press shop is "an important milestone" in reducing the environmental impact of production, said VW production director Christian Vollmer on Wednesday at the official start-up.

With the expansion, including a 180-ton XL press, body parts that were previously obtained from Emden or Wolfsburg, for example, are now being produced on site.

This would save more than 9,000 truck journeys and around 5800 tons of CO2 per year, emphasized Vollmer.

VW, previously responsible as a group for an estimated one percent of global CO2 emissions, wants its products and as a company to be completely CO2-free by 2050.

This includes switching to electric vehicles.

The Zwickau plant plays a pioneering role here.

Since 2018, it has been completely converted to the production of electric cars for around 1.2 billion euros.

In addition to the ID series from Volkswagen itself, e-models from other VW subsidiaries are also produced there.
