Wittstock / Dosse (dpa / bb) - The death march memorial in the Belower Forest (Ostprignitz-Ruppin district) has commemorated the 40th anniversary of its existence.

"The opening of the museum was an important step for this significant historical place, which reminds of the last murderous chapter in the history of the concentration camps," said memorial director Carmen Lange according to a press release published on Wednesday.

Every year around 5,000 people visited the museum, said Lange.

However, it is currently closed due to the corona pandemic.

The heart of the memorial, which opened in the GDR on May 7, 1981, is a historic forest area, where in April 1945 more than 16,000 prisoners from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp were driven on a death march - without care and under the supervision of the SS Days of the Nazi regime shortly before the liberation by the Red Army more than 1000 prisoners died.
