Cologne (dpa) - Unlike previously planned, the computer game fair Gamescom does not want to let any visitors into the Cologne halls this year.

After intensive discussions with partners and exhibitors, the decision was made to host Gamescom 2021 as a purely digital event, announced the organizers of Koelnmesse and the game association on Wednesday.

This takes into account "the current situation, in which too many companies cannot take part in physical events this year due to the ongoing difficult development," the message continues.

The decision enables companies to plan with certainty.

In March, the organizers of the industry get-together for digital games announced that they were planning this year's event as a hybrid version with an online program and on-site offers.

The number of visitors should be greatly reduced compared to pre-Corona times.

Now visitors should be completely left out.

The online offer of the fair should be free of charge for Gamescom fans.

There was no audience on site as early as 2020.

In 2019, a total of 370,000 visitors came to the fair, the crowd was sometimes large.

This year's Gamescom is to take place from August 25th to 27th.
