The shortage of semiconductors has prevented the automotive group Stellantis, resulting from the merger of Peugeot-Citroën and Fiat Chrysler, to produce as many vehicles as expected in the first quarter, without for the moment slowing down sales.

The group fears that the shortage will continue into the second quarter, with even greater consequences.

Eight of the group's 44 factories are currently affected.

The manufacturer Stellantis, which produces 14 brands of cars, is facing a shortage of semiconductors.

Its factories can no longer operate, which in the first quarter resulted in a loss of production of 190,000 vehicles.

The group warns that this will continue for a few more months.

Despite an improvement expected in the second half of the year, the crisis should continue until 2022. Visibility is low for the group, which claims to manage the situation on a day-to-day basis, depending on stocks and model profitability.

Due to this shortage, its competitor the French Renault plans to produce 100,000 vehicles less this year, the American Ford announces to halve its production.

Semiconductors are essential components in the automotive industry, but also in the IT sector where, due to the pandemic and teleworking, demand has exploded.

Manufactured mainly in Asia, they are the object of a very strong world demand, which creates tensions on the supplies.

Taiwanese group TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor maker, which recently announced $ 100 billion in investment to speed up chip manufacturing, hopes to meet demands from automakers by June.
