Tourism in Schleswig-Holstein is picking up speed despite Corona.

Holidaymakers can now head for another popular holiday region on the Baltic Sea.

Several holiday resorts on the Bay of Lübeck are allowed to receive holidaymakers from this Saturday.

In addition, vaccinated, convalescent and tested people will be allowed to visit restaurants throughout the country and stay overnight in accommodation facilities from May 17th under strict guidelines, as Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) announced on Wednesday.

The Ostholstein district gave the go-ahead on Wednesday for the start of a model project in the communities of Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz, Sierksdorf and Neustadt, as announced by the tourism agencies involved.

The project, initially limited to four weeks, is tied to strict guidelines, for example corona tests at close range.

The “Inner Bay of Lübeck” model region can be launched after the number of infections in Ostholstein has fallen again.

Around 300 companies had declared their willingness to participate and can now open their doors to holidaymakers.

Around 5000 beds in Timmendorfer Strand and a total of around 6500 beds for Scharbeutz, Sierksdorf and Neustadt in Holstein are available for tourists.

Further tourist model projects are ongoing in the Schlei region, in Eckernförde and in North Friesland.

Another project is to start next Monday in Büsum (Dithmarschen).

The prerequisites for the model projects are corona incidences stable below 100 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

Schleswig-Holstein stood at 54.5 on Tuesday evening, Ostholstein at 55.8.

Guests must come to the respective model region with a fresh negative test and repeat this at the destination within a few days.

Test receipts are required when visiting restaurants, and various declarations of consent are required for rentals.

Apart from the four model regions, tourism in the north is still idle.

However, further openings are conceivable.

The state government is in talks about how to proceed.

According to the model region “Inner Bay of Lübeck”, the leading hotels are taking part in the model project there, as are large agencies that offer many individual holiday apartments.

Private landlords are also there.

For camping enthusiasts, there is a selection of places where you can spend the night with a caravan or mobile home close to nature.

Many restaurants are also waiting for guests, some of them also open their interiors.

The corona tests that vacationers are supposed to take every 48 hours are free of charge for them.

The model project is scientifically supported by the University of Lübeck with the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology.

Schlei model region: 400,000 overnight stays, no increase in corona infections

In the meantime, the Ostseefjord Schlei tourism model region would like to be extended.

A corresponding application for an extension from May 17 to June 13 was sent to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said the managing director of Ostseefjord Schlei GmbH (OfS), Max Triphaus, on Wednesday.

According to the application, indoor catering in the region should be allowed to open by May 13th at the latest due to the great demand for Ascension Day.

Triphaus referred to the experience from Eckernförde, where the opening of indoor catering has so far proven to be harmless.

He expects an answer from the ministry by the end of the week on how to proceed with the model region.

In the Schlei region, the model project now offers overnight accommodation for around 20,000 people. Almost half of this is on campsites (9,000). OfS expects around 400,000 overnight stays in the four weeks of the model project. According to calculations by the tourism experts, the guests will turn over around 20 million euros over the period. Not included in the figures are the expenses that day visitors, second home owners and long-term campers make.

The mood in the population and in the companies is predominantly positive. The cautious restart of tourism in the Schlei region did not, as some feared, lead to an increase in new corona infections. According to the information, 24,000 rapid antigen tests have been carried out since the start of the project. Positive test results were then verified by PCR tests. The positive report was confirmed in five cases, said Triphaus. Three guests and two locals were affected. Two of the guests drove home on the instructions of the health department, one went into quarantine in the holiday property
