Prime Minister Jean Castex announced, Wednesday, May 5, the death of a police officer, killed during an anti-drug operation in Avignon during which several police officers were targeted by gunfire.

"Everything is being done to ensure that this heinous act does not go unpunished," the head of government said on Twitter.

One of our police officers was fatally injured this evening in Avignon, while he was in intervention.


My first thoughts go to his loved ones and to the great family of the @PoliceNationale, again in mourning.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said he was going there on Wednesday evening, citing a "terrible tragedy" and specifying that several police officers had been the target of shots.

The seriously injured policeman died.

Faced with this terrible tragedy, we think of his family, his relatives and his colleagues.

The entire Interior Ministry is in mourning.
