City qualified for the tournament final for the first time in its history, hoping to crown its elusive title despite its dominance of domestic championships in England in recent years, and spending more than a billion dollars on contracts with the best players.

Saint-Germain was prevented from qualifying for the final for the second year in a row, after winning the runners-up last season behind Bayern Munich, who won the title.
