Greifswald (dpa / mv) - The newly built Greifswald city archive will be opened to the general public later than planned.

This was explained by representatives of the city administration on Tuesday during a visit for journalists.

The last pieces of furniture were still missing for the reading room due to corona-related delivery problems, and they should arrive at the end of May.

The opening of the new city archive for users could therefore only take place in the summer; it was originally planned to start in spring 2021.

The construction work for the new city archive was completed in the summer of last year.

The archive materials have meanwhile been moved to the new archive rooms.

According to the information, the building has four floors, the reading room is located on the ground floor.

There will also be the option of setting up a larger event area using movable walls.

During the construction, attention was paid to sustainability, the energy for heating and cooling comes from a geothermal system.

A photovoltaic system also provides power generation.

The total costs amounted to around 8 million euros, of which 3.67 million euros came from the state's urban development funds.

"The archive material can now finally be properly stored and made more easily accessible to the public.", Said the head of the cultural office, Anett Hauswald, happily: "In contrast to the old building in Arndtstrasse, the new building is barrier-free."

In recent years, the previous storage rooms have proven to be far too small and not optimal, and archive stocks had to be stored at different locations.

The Greifswald city archive includes significant written records on the history of the city, official books, files and other archival and collection items, including the document conferring the town charter of May 14, 1250.
