“The pre-trial publicity affected the former police officer's ability to get a fair trial,” says Shovin's lawyer Eric Nelson.

The appeal states that the court abused its discretion by rejecting requests to change the venue and conduct a new trial.

The application also contains a request for an “impeachment” order.

Earlier it was reported that the US Department of Justice opened an investigation into the Minneapolis police after a court verdict in the case of the murder of African American George Floyd.

In April, a court found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of Floyd's murder. He faces up to 40 years in prison.
