A fire broke out in the Tiefstack thermal power station in Hamburg-Billbrook early on Tuesday evening.

According to the fire department, a conveyor belt caught fire on which coal is being transported to the incinerator.

There was a lot of smoke.

However, people are not in danger, said a fire department spokesman.

"The emergency services are now trying to find out whether and how much the fire has spread in a coal silo," said the spokesman.

The fire brigade is on duty with four fire engines and various special vehicles and more than 100 fire fighters.

"Could be tedious"

There is an enormous demand for water, so a fireboat was also used in the nearby canal.

"That could be a very long story," said the spokesman.

Depending on how far the fire had spread in the silo, the deployment could take a long time.

The residents were warned of the smoke development.

The Tiefstack cogeneration plant covers a large part of Hamburg's district heating needs.

Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke had already put their first large-scale power plant into operation here in 1917.

The current system dates from 1993. The thermal power station is designed for the base load.

The plant is currently still operated with hard coal.

The use of coal in Tiefstack is to be ended by 2030 at the latest.

Even before that, there was a lot to do for the Hamburg fire brigade.

A thunderstorm had caused numerous fire services.

"We have our hands full," said a spokesman.

By early evening, the fire brigade counted 62 missions due to fallen trees and loose facade parts, people were not injured.

In the Wellingsbüttel district, a 20 meter high birch fell on the road.

The tree had to be secured with a crane and sawed.

Storm "Eugen" also affected rail traffic.

About 300 meters from Lattenkamp train station, a tree fell onto the tracks.

A train on line U1 came to a stop in front of the tree.

According to the first information, there were no injuries, the fire brigade removed the tree.

The rail traffic had to be interrupted.
