Menlo Park (dpa) - Today it becomes known whether the former US President Donald Trump will remain blocked on Facebook.

The independent supervisory body of the world's largest online network plans to announce its decision to do so around 3 p.m. CEST.

The so-called oversight board can overturn decisions by management and content reviewers on posts and people - and it has the final say.

Facebook blocked Trump - as well as Twitter and Youtube - in January shortly before the end of his term in office.

The trigger was the storming of the US Capitol by his supporters - and that he expressed sympathy for the attackers.

Twitter has already stressed that Trump has no way back on the platform.

Google's video platform Youtube, on the other hand, wants to unblock its profile when “the risk of violence has decreased”.

After being banned from online services, Trump has been reliant on sending statements by email in recent months.

Before that, the Twitter account was by far his most important communication channel with more than 80 million subscribers.

On Tuesday, Trump inaugurated a new communication channel on his website. The blog area is reminiscent of Twitter - but there are only contributions from Trump. At the same time, Trump's supporters could carry statements by the former US president through a back door to Twitter and Facebook, so to speak. Because you can share every short article with a few clicks as a quote and link on the online platforms. It was initially unclear whether the services would allow this.

In the past few months there has been repeated speculation that the ex-president could start his own online platform.

In the blog area entitled “From Donald J. Trump's Desk”, his followers can add a “Like” heart to individual posts, as they do on Twitter - and they can also be notified of new posts.

However, there is no opportunity to comment on Trump's contributions.

Trump is still popular with many Republican voters - and that continues to secure him significant influence in the party.

At the same time, his ability to influence public opinion fell drastically with the bans on online services.

Unlike Twitter and Youtube, Facebook has a supervisory body made up of legal experts, activists and former politicians that can review the online network's decisions on how to deal with individuals and content.

It is a kind of “Supreme Court” from Facebook, whose decisions even founder and boss Mark Zuckerberg cannot override.

The money for the supervisory body was provided by Facebook - but is in a trust company, which is supposed to ensure independence.

In the few previous decisions, the Oversight Board has already reversed several blocks of content by Facebook.
