Neubrandenburg / Rostock (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the police have been keeping a closer eye on cyclists and electric cyclists since Wednesday.

The two-wheelers, who can also reach speeds of up to 45 kilometers per hour with an electric motor, are at the center of the themed monthly controls in May, as the police in Neubrandenburg announced.

The aim is to reduce the number of accidents with cyclists as much as possible.

According to police accident statistics, 1,495 cyclists were involved in accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the previous year, 174 of them being electric cyclists.

Despite the corona-related breaks in tourism in spring and autumn, the number was similar to 2019.

The officers should, among other things, draw attention to reflective clothing, helmets and functioning lighting, which can be life-saving in the event of a collision with cars or trucks.

Driving safety training should also be offered.

In addition, children up to the age of ten can drive on sidewalks, it said.

This also applies to supervisors, who, however, have to take pedestrians into consideration.

In the north-east, cycle paths along the road are still rare.

The police organize themed traffic controls every month, which also take a close look at the right of way, alcohol or cell phone behind the wheel and frenzy.
