Bonn (dpa) - The boom in online trading in Corona times has given Deutsche Post DHL the strongest start to the year in its company's history.

The group profit in the first quarter of this year was 1.2 billion euros and thus four times as high as in the same period of the previous year, as the Bonn group announced on Wednesday.

Sales increased by 22 percent to 18.9 billion euros.

The start of the new financial year was more dynamic than ever, said Post boss Frank Appel.

The group sees continued dynamism in e-commerce and a clear stabilization in world trade with increasing air and sea freight volumes.

For the current year, the industry giant is even more optimistic than before: Instead of wanting to post operating income (EBIT) well over 5.6 billion euros, the group, with around 570,000 employees, is aiming for more than 6.7 billion euros for 2021.

Business is booming in his home market of Germany too.

The parcel volume in this country was reportedly in the first quarter 41.3 percent higher than a year ago.

However, Swiss Post is also feeling the economic downside of the pandemic in Germany: The volume in the mail business, which is still very lucrative for it in the digital age despite declining volumes, fell by 9.5 percent and thus significantly more than in previous years.

One reason for the big minus are losses in advertising mail - dealers are holding back with orders, also because their sales opportunities are limited in the pandemic.
