Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - The police in Chemnitz have determined three suspected mail thieves aged 42, 33 and 18 years.

The suspects are accused of stealing at least 285 letters from January 2019 to March 2021, as the police announced in Chemnitz on Tuesday.

Two men and a woman were aiming for vouchers, among other things.

The damage done was given as around 20,000 euros.

However, it has not yet been conclusively clarified how many recipients were actually affected.

According to the information, the thefts occurred at irregular intervals mainly in the districts of Sonnenberg, Siegmar and Rabenstein. A 42-year-old driver from a company commissioned by Deutsche Post to transport letters from public mailboxes and post offices to the mail distribution center in Chemnitz first came into the focus of investigators in spring 2020. But it wasn't until March 2021 that he was caught red-handed, according to the information. When the man's apartment was searched, vouchers that had not yet been redeemed were found, among other things.

In the further course of the investigation, the other two suspects were determined.

Together with the 42-year-old, they are said to have collected the letters on joint transport tours and opened the stolen copies at home after the tours were over.

Now the police are still looking for numerous victims of the thefts.

With a clear proof of ownership, for example in the form of a purchase receipt, they can assert their claim to the seized vouchers.
