Essen (dpa / lnw) - The coal-fired electricity producer Steag, which belongs to several Ruhr district municipalities, wants to shut down more power plants.

Steag announced the plants in Bergkamen in North Rhine-Westphalia and Völklingen-Fenne in Saarland with the Federal Network Agency for temporary shutdown, the company announced on Tuesday in Essen.

The general economic conditions prevented "adequate operation of the two power plant blocks for the foreseeable future", Steag boss Joachim Rumstadt justified the step.

Steag is one of the largest coal-fired electricity producers in Germany and is also in great difficulties because of the energy transition.

The owners, six municipal utilities from the Ruhr area, want to transfer their shares to the RAG Foundation.

As a trustee, she should prepare a sale of the company.

The 40-year-old power plant in Bergkamen, with a net rated output of over 700 megawatts, is one of the largest electricity machines in Germany.

In the end it was only used for days.

The plant has only been generating electricity since 2016, so that its shutdown would have no impact on the heat supply in the region, emphasized Steag.

There are alternatives for heat from the Völklingen-Fenne thermal power station.

The transmission system operator Amprion will now check whether the two power plants are systemically relevant for the power supply in Germany and therefore have to be kept in reserve.
