Bremen (dpa / lni) - The largest single drug discovery by the Bremen Customs last year was 1.4 tons of cocaine with a market value of around 150 million euros.

The main customs office in Bremen announced on Tuesday that the drug was discovered in Bremerhaven in a load of bananas from South America in October 2020.

The big find is only now made public for tactical reasons.

"This cocaine shipment shows that Bremerhaven, the fourth largest container port in Europe, is still considered a gateway to Europe for cocaine smugglers," said Nicole Tödter, head of the office.

The big drug finds by the Bremen customs investigators in 2020 also included more than 500 kilograms of hashish.

They were hidden in the false floor of a pickup truck.

According to the annual balance sheet, customs also seized 2,200 weapons or weapon parts, 175,000 untaxed cigarettes and counterfeit branded goods for 2.5 million euros.

The slump in foreign trade in the corona pandemic was reflected in a decline in customs income in Bremen.

Compared to 2019, they fell by 400 million euros to just under 3.9 billion euros.
