Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Senate has launched a new funding program for commercial cargo bikes.

Depending on the equipment, companies should be supported with up to 2000 euros when buying a transport bike, as the Senate Department for Transport announced on Tuesday.

Applications can be submitted to the Investitionsbank Berlin from May 10th.

According to the Senate Department, there are 2000 euros for cargo bikes with electric drive, 1000 euros for those without electronic support.

For a bicycle trailer, the subsidy is 500 euros.

The program comprises a total of 600,000 euros.

The Senate had already launched its first funding program for cargo bikes in 2018.

At that time, a volume of around 200,000 euros was made available to both commercial and private buyers.

The money was gone that year.

Since then there has not been an extension of the funding.

"Our goal is to continue funding for cargo bikes in order to enable attractive city-friendly deliveries," said Transport Senator Regine Günther on Tuesday.

However, private cargo bike buyers are not included in the new program.
