Berlin (dpa) - After six months of readiness, the operating license at Tegel Airport expires on Wednesday night.

"Tegel will be shut down," said airport boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup on Tuesday during a tour of the site.

"We say thank you with great respect."

The last plane left Tegel on November 8, heading for Paris.

Since then, according to the airport company, there have been no more take-offs and landings in the north of Berlin.

Tegel had to stand by for six months in "slumber mode" in the event that there were still problems at the new BER airport after its official start of operations in November 2020.

Federal police, German air traffic control, the German weather service and other authorities were still present in Tegel.

Lütke Daldrup said the area was guarded and kept operational.

Now it is finally over.

Buildings that are no longer needed will be dismantled and the site will gradually be handed over to the State of Berlin.

Then the state-owned Tegel Projekt GmbH takes care of the further development of the area: the Beuth University of Technology is to move into the iconic main terminal of the former airport.

The company also wants to build around 5000 new wooden apartments as well as a technical and industrial park.
