Herten / Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Two pedagogues from Herten were honored in the “German Teacher Award 2020” competition for their exemplary work as primary school principals. The directors of the primary school in Herten-Mitte, Stephanie Lehmann and Susanne Schäfer, received the first prize of 2000 euros in the "Exemplary school management" category, which was advertised for the first time. At the online award ceremony on Tuesday, three more school principals were awarded nationwide. The headmasters had been suggested by their colleges. The managers in Herten were praised, among other things, for the continuous further qualification of the team and the constructive feedback culture.

In the “Excellent Teachers” category, two of the ten nationwide awards went to North Rhine-Westphalia, namely to Karsten Brill from the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium Bönen and Mehmet Cosgunoglu from the Albert-Schweitzer-Realschule Remscheid-Lennep. They had been suggested by students. The students emphasized the ability to criticize, the creative, lively lessons and the intensive lesson preparation, among other things, the organizers of the competition, the Heraeus Education Foundation and the German Philological Association, reported in Hanau on Tuesday. The prize money is 500 euros each.

North Rhine-Westphalia's School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) said she was delighted with the awards.

According to a press release, she emphasized that the new category of "exemplary school management" "rightly casts a special spotlight on the outstanding work that school leaders do on a daily basis".

Nationwide, more than 6,400 teachers and students took part in the competition.

Reviewers and a jury selected the winners from the proposals.

A total of 19 awards were given on Tuesday.

According to the company, the aim of the competition is to increase the public appreciation of teachers and school principals and to publicize exemplary practical examples.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is the patron of the competition.
