Sassnitz (dpa / mv) - Unknowns smeared so-called stumbling blocks in two places on the island of Rügen, reminding of victims of the Nazi regime.

As the police announced on Monday, 15 stones in Sassnitz and three in Garz on Rügen were smeared with brown and black paint.

The state security responsible for political crimes took over the investigation on suspicion of sedition and damage to property.

The police suspect a connection.

The time of the offense is from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning.

Stumbling blocks are cobblestones that have a brass plaque on which the life data of former Jewish citizens and other victims of the Nazi rulers are engraved.

They were designed by the artist Gunter Demnig and are usually let into the pavement in front of the victims' last self-chosen place of residence.

Such memorial stones are now in 1265 municipalities in Germany and in twenty-one European countries.
