Rheinböllen (dpa / lrs) - After negotiations on a future and social collective agreement, IG Metall, the works council and Continental have agreed on a transformation concept for the Rheinböllen location.

Continental announced this on Monday.

According to the company, the contents include the establishment of a competence and production center for autonomous transport robots.

But there are also painful cuts in the number of employees at the site, it said.

These are to be "mitigated" through partial retirement, voluntary measures and a transfer company.

Amicable, socially acceptable solutions would be sought.

"The agreement now creates clarity for everyone involved," said site manager Stephan Nachtmann according to a statement.

According to IG Metall, the agreement prevented an unlimited strike at the last minute.

"The cornerstones provide for Continental to develop and expand the Rheinböllen location into a competence and production center in Europe," announced the union.

Due to operational reasons, members of IG Metall could not be dismissed until the end of 2023.

A minimum of 315 employees will be agreed by April 30, 2025.

"A deforestation could be prevented," said Ingo Petzold, authorized representative of IG Metall in Bad Kreuznach.

"In this respect I consider the key points at hand as a good compromise."
