Demmin (dpa / mv) - The demonstrations that have been taking place for years on May 8 in Demmin (Mecklenburg Lake District) are again significantly smaller this year due to the corona restrictions.

As a spokeswoman for the district said on Monday, the right-wing extremist NPD canceled their planned meeting with a torchlight parade for this Saturday.

The “Action Alliance 8 May Demmin” also announced that instead of the usual protest parades, this time only two rallies would be held at the market and at the port.

This is intended to commemorate the liberation from fascism.

In Demmin, at the end of the war in 1945, one of the largest mass suicides in Germany occurred among locals and refugees.

The occasion was also clashes with Russian armored troops who were stuck in the city because of several bridges blown up.

The city regularly commemorates what happened at the end of April 1945 with a wreath-laying ceremony in early May.

Most recently in 2019 around 600 people, including the Demmin Action Alliance, protested against an NPD “torchlight march” in Demmin.

In the district, the seven-day incidence was most recently around 130 new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
