Erfurt (dpa / th) - Thuringia's companies employ too few people with severe disabilities.

The majority of companies do not meet their obligation to employ people with disabilities, as figures from the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency show on Monday.

The proportion of jobs that are occupied by severely disabled people is 4.4 percent and thus below the nationwide employment rate of 4.6 percent.

After all, there is a slight upward trend.

In 2018, the employment rate in Thuringia was 4.3 percent.

Companies with a size of 20 or more jobs are legally obliged to assign five percent of jobs to severely disabled people.

If companies fail to meet this requirement, they will have to pay a countervailing charge.

Since 2021, this has been between 140 and 360 euros per unoccupied job per year.

According to the regional directorate, 4640 companies in Thuringia are obliged to employ severely disabled people.

57 percent of these companies would pay a compensatory levy because they do not or only partially meet their employment obligations.

1021 companies would not have any severely disabled employees.

“Unfortunately, especially in smaller companies, there is more fear of contact with severely disabled people.

This is also due to the fact that smaller companies have only limited resources to deal with the advantages and funding opportunities when hiring severely disabled people, ”explained the managing director of the regional directorate, Markus Behrens.

The employment rate is lowest in the Thuringian construction industry with 2.5 percent and highest in public administration with 6.4 percent.
