Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Thuringian Midwives Association (HLV) has drawn attention to the difficult situation for pregnant women in rural areas. "Unfortunately obstetrical wards are closing in East and South Thuringia, so that pregnant women have to plan more and more ways to a maternity ward," the association announced on Monday in Erfurt. With closings such as last year in Schleiz (Saale-Orla district) or this year in Hildburghausen and Greiz, the nearest clinics are sometimes 30 to 40 kilometers away from the original location. The travel times are up to 40 minutes. The surrounding clinics had not been prepared in terms of staff or structure to take care of the additional births. “Midwives are moving to other areas or giving up their obstetric work,” the association announced. For International Midwives Day on May 5th, he called for the development and promotion of local obstetrics model projects. The HLV represents over 400 midwives and future midwives in Thuringia.
