Frankfurt / Oder (dpa / bb) - The main customs office in Frankfurt (Oder) confiscated several tons of drugs, almost 500 weapons and a ton of fireworks last year.

This emerges from the office's annual balance sheet published on Monday.

Accordingly, the customs officers went into the network during controls in East Brandenburg 3.85 tons of narcotics.

Firearms and electric pulse devices were among the weapons seized.

According to the information, the customs investigators also seized 6.8 million contraband cigarettes and 1.3 tons of loose tobacco.

One of the tasks of customs is to combat illegal employment.

According to the balance sheet, customs officers checked 994 employers last year.

1721 investigative proceedings on suspicion of criminal offenses were initiated.

As a result of audits by the customs office, courts have imposed a total of 99 months' imprisonment and fined more than 307,000 euros.

In addition, there would be fines and warnings of almost 230,000 euros.

The office put the total damage for the social insurance carriers at around 19.5 million euros.

In addition to the construction industry, the customs investigators controlled, according to the information, above all the hotel and catering industry, the freight forwarding, transport and logistics industry as well as the cleaning industry.

Finally, the balance sheet said that the main customs office had received around 2.05 billion euros for the federal government and the European Union.

The majority of this was the consumption taxes as well as the energy tax.
