Krefeld (dpa) - Sloth "Jan", the oldest zoo sloth in the world, will be 51 this Friday.

It has lived in the Krefeld Zoo since 1986 and now has its own entry in the Guinness Book of Records - with a corresponding certificate.

Jan's date of birth has been set for April 30, 1970.

"But nobody really knows," said zoo spokeswoman Petra Schwinn.

The sloth comes from the wild and was around six months to a year old when it first came to the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg in December 1970.

Jan now lives in the rainforest house at Krefeld Zoo and is extremely shy.

The “photo shoot” for the Guinness book took several weeks - because Jan just didn't show up.

“He's shy of cameras and people, and he's also active at night,” said Schwinn.

In his small group of conspecifics, Jan takes it easy - depending on the species.

According to the spokeswoman, he eats leaves, vegetables and fruits.

"Grapes are high on his popularity list."

By the way, the zoo is planning to celebrate a birthday: nothing.

Jan is not a “party animal”, but rather the exact opposite: a loner.
