Berlin (dpa) - Dirk Nowitzki has given the German basketball players a difficult preliminary group for the EM 2022 in Cologne.

In the first phase of the tournament, the team of national coach Henrik Rödl will face European champions Slovenia, the medal candidates France and Lithuania as well as Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

That was the result of the draw on Thursday in Berlin, in which Nowitzki also drew lots as EM ambassador.

The other three preliminary round groups of the continental tournament will take place in the Czech Republic (Prague), Georgia (Tbilisi) and Italy (Milan).

The first four teams reach the round of 16, the complete knockout round takes place in Berlin.

The former European champion Lithuania was already determined as a German opponent before the draw, as each of the four preliminary round hosts could choose an opponent.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the EM had been postponed by one year to 2022 and will now take place from September 1st to 18th.
