Hagnau (dpa) - There will be no fish farming facilities in Lake Constance anytime soon.

The plans of the “Regio Bodensee Fisch” cooperative to breed fish in net cages would not be pursued for the time being, said chairman Martin Meichle on Thursday in Hagnau (Lake Constance district).

A corresponding application has not yet been submitted and there are no more plans.

Meichle cited the legal situation as reasons, which the project currently does not allow.

In addition, the members of the cooperative would first like to consult personally on the project, which has received much criticism.

In times of the pandemic, this is not so easy, according to Meichle.

There is also uncertainty as to how the future Baden-Wuerttemberg state government will react to this.

The Südwestrundfunk had previously reported.

The cooperative had previously presented its plans to build facilities for breeding whitefish in Lake Constance because the catches have been falling for years.

The reason for this is, for example, a lack of nutrients in the ever cleaner lake.

The majority of professional fishermen refused.

They fear the transmission of diseases to wild animals and the pollution of Lake Constance.

Baden-Württemberg's Agriculture Minister Peter Hauk (CDU) was open to the plans.

The Greens, on the other hand, clearly rejected the project.

The Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture saw a future for the plans only with the approval of the Lake Constance fishermen.

And these are against it, it was said.
