Berlin / Erfurt (dpa) - SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil has called on CDU boss and Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet to prevent the former President of the Constitutional Protection, Hans-Georg Maaßen, from running for the Bundestag.
"The CDU boss must intervene and credibly close the open flank to the right," said Klingbeil the news portal watson.
«If he can no longer prevent the nomination of Maaßen, that shows that the Union’s doors to the right-wing camp are open.
The days of the Merkel CDU are finally over, ”Klingbeil continued.
Four CDU district associations in South Thuringia will decide on Friday whether to send Maaßen into the race as a joint Bundestag candidate for constituency 196.
According to reports, the 58-year-old has a good chance of running - despite considerable concerns within the Union, including among the ranks of the Thuringian CDU leadership.
The federal election will be held on September 26th.
