Aurich (dpa / lni) - Almost a year after the Corona outbreak in a restaurant in East Frisia with two deaths, the public prosecutor's office has closed its investigations into negligent homicide.

"We were unable to determine a possible" patient zero "who brought the virus into the evening event," said the Aurich public prosecutor's spokesman, Jan Wilken, on Thursday.

First the "Ostfriesen-Zeitung" reported.

At a celebration for the opening of a restaurant in Moormerland (Leer district) in May 2020, more than 30 out of 50 guests were infected with the corona virus - two died later.

According to earlier information, three guests should have shown symptoms that indicated Covid-19 disease before the opening night.

The police and the public prosecutor's office opened an investigation.

This suspicion was not confirmed after extensive interrogations, said Wilken.

"None of the guests had shown symptoms of illness."

A culpable behavior could therefore not be determined.

The public prosecutor emphasized that the event was a "permitted restaurant" according to the then valid Corona rules.

There was also a hygiene concept that, according to the investigations, was largely adhered to.

Because of administrative offenses about distance rules, however, there were still proceedings in the responsible district in Leer, it said.

The corona outbreak in the restaurant with a closed society caused a stir across the country last year.

Around 200 people were quarantined, including employees of the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg.

The restaurant operator emphasized that he had always followed all hygiene guidelines.
