Erfurt (dpa / th) - Victims of GDR home education can also count on help in the future in Thuringia.

The Ministry of Education announced on Thursday in Erfurt that the advisory service will continue to be maintained.

From this Friday, those affected could contact the state commissioner for dealing with the SED dictatorship, Peter Wurschi, directly.

With the continuation of the advisory service, the state is meeting the important and well-founded concerns of those affected and victims' associations, said Minister of Education Helmut Holter (Left).

According to estimates, up to 500,000 children were housed in homes in the GDR, and around 80,000 children in Thuringia.

Many of them experienced beatings, harassment and abuse.

In Thuringia, according to the information, around 4,700 affected people had received benefits through an aid fund that ran until 2018.

The money was used to finance pension replacement benefits, cures, therapies and dentures, among other things.

After the fund expired, up to 800 people still had a need for advice.

At the moment there are an average of 20 to 30 consultations a week, it said.
