Lübeck (dpa) - The medical and safety technology group Drägerwerk started the new year with a profit thanks to strong demand, especially for ventilators and respiratory masks.

The surplus amounted to 82.8 million euros in the first quarter, announced the SDax group on Thursday when it presented its quarterly report in Lübeck.

In the previous year the company had posted a loss of 6.7 million euros.

The company had already presented key data for the first quarter in mid-April.

Drägerwerk reaffirmed its targets for the year as a whole.

In the first three months, as already known, sales climbed by around 24 percent year-on-year to a good 792 million euros.

Adjusted for currency effects, sales increased by more than a quarter.

Both the medical and safety technology segments contributed to this.

Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) were just under 129 million euros after a small minus in the previous year.

As expected, incoming orders fell significantly in the first three months after Drägerwerk had benefited from the high demand a year earlier in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic that flared up at the time.

At around 740 million euros, orders in the past quarter were only half as high as a year earlier, adjusted for currency effects, but they were still almost 100 million euros higher than in the pre-Corona period in the first quarter of 2019.
