Rendsburg (dpa / lno) - Starting next week, the people of Schleswig-Holstein will be able to taste the first locally grown strawberries.

Despite the cold April, the first of these sweet fruits will be ripe in the country at the beginning of May, as the Chamber of Agriculture announced on Thursday.

However, there are initially only small quantities, as only a few companies use the cost-intensive early cultivation in the polytunnels.

Most of the strawberry growers will probably be marketing the harvest from mid-May.

"Because of Corona, the regional producers are facing another difficult season," said Chamber President Ute Volquardsen.

"All the more I wish our strawberry farms the right weather, a good harvest and sales season, a healthy workforce and of course fair prices."

Consumers should pay attention to local goods when shopping.

"Our regional strawberries are unbeatable in terms of freshness and taste," said Volquardsen.

The Chamber of Agriculture expects very good quality strawberries.

There was no winter frost damage.

Since March and April were quite cold and humid, the season starts a week later than last year.

According to the chamber, the area under cultivation has fallen by around ten percent to around 800 hectares.

Around 10,000 tons of strawberries are produced in Schleswig-Holstein.

In order to be on the market in good time, all 80 strawberry farms in the country are premature part of their strawberry cultivation.

This is done on around 60 hectares by cultivation in foil tunnels, which corresponds to seven percent of the total area.

The largest cultivation areas are in the districts of the Duchy of Lauenburg, Plön and Ostholstein.

1500 harvest workers are needed for the harvest.

It is still open whether there will be enough.
