Waren / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The art installation "Perspektiven zur Freiheit" - the central commemorative symbol of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania of the Peaceful Revolution in 1989 - has been awarded a design prize.

As the Schwerin Ministry of Education announced on Thursday, the work of art was honored with the undoped “iF DESIGN AWARD” in the “Interior architecture” category.

The award is given in Hanover by an independent design institution - the iF International Forum Design GmbH.

An international jury had to decide on around 10,000 entries, 1,700 of which received prizes in 9 categories.

There were 142 prizes in “Interior Design”.

The installation arouses curiosity, offers information and exchange, and invites you to remember, said State Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD).

The work of art consists of thin white poles, between which are panels with stamped slogans from autumn 1989.

Visitors can use an app to view and download historical images from that time as well as further information.

The fragile work of art was inaugurated in October 2020 and commemorates October 16, 1989, when around 400 citizens demonstrated with candles in their hands from St. George's Church.

This is considered to be the beginning of the peaceful revolution in the former northern districts of Schwerin, Rostock and Neubrandenburg, whose areas are now part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
