Guayaquil (AP) - In new riots in a prison in Ecuador, at least five prisoners were killed.

Another twelve people were injured in the fighting between alleged gang members in the correctional facility in the economic metropolis of Guayaquil on the Pacific coast, the South American country's public prosecutor said on Wednesday.

Special police forces stormed the prison and brought the situation under control.

After the fighting between the Los Choneros and Los Lobos gangs, firearms, ammunition and knives were confiscated.

As recently as February, 79 people were killed in violent clashes between rival gangs in several prisons in Ecuador.

The clash was apparently triggered by an internal power struggle within the Los Choneros crime syndicate after its top leader, José Luis Zambrano, alias “Rasquiña”, was killed in December.

A few hours before the new riots, the former lawyer for "Rasquiña" was shot dead on Wednesday in the capital Quito on his way to work.
