Lorup (dpa / lni) - The highly contagious avian influenza continues to spread in Lower Saxony.

On Thursday, the infection of around 4,200 turkey roosters in a farm in the municipality of Lorup in the Emsland district was confirmed.

"It is the highly pathogenic influenza virus H5N1," said the district.

The animals are killed and the farm is cleaned.

The pathogen is considered to be harmless to humans.

The main fear is the high economic damage.

From May 1st, a restricted area will be set up within a three-kilometer radius and an observation area within a ten-kilometer radius. In both areas, any transport of live poultry and eggs is prohibited, as the district announced. Almost 170 commercial businesses with around five million birds and many hobby businesses are affected by these restrictions. The virus was recently also detected in wild birds in the Emsland district.

In the past few months there have been numerous outbreaks in poultry fattening farms in Lower Saxony.

In March, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that around one million animals had been affected so far.

In Emsland and other districts, poultry are compulsory.

In the district of Nienburg, on the other hand, poultry can be kept outdoors again from May 1st.

The district of Uelzen recently lifted the requirement for poultry to be stabled.
