Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The housing cooperatives in Hamburg completed significantly more apartments in 2020.

The number rose by 453 to 1581, announced the chairwoman of the Hamburg Housing Cooperative Association, Alexandra Chrobok, on Thursday.

The cooperatives are an important factor in providing the people in Hamburg with affordable housing.

The association bundles the activities of 30 Hamburg cooperatives that offer a total of more than 133,000 apartments.

This corresponds to around 20 percent of all rental apartments in Hamburg.

"Our monthly net rent is currently an average of EUR 7.03 per square meter, which is well below the Hamburg rent index of EUR 8.66," said Chrobok.

"We are the real brake on rental prices."

Last year, Hamburg's housing cooperatives invested almost 700 million euros in the construction, maintenance and modernization of apartments.

In 2021 it should be around 20 million euros more.

The board of directors of the Allgemeine Deutsche Schiffszimmerer-Genossenschaft eG, Matthias Saß, emphasized that the cooperatives had a great interest in an "alliance for living" in Hamburg.

"However, we reject the Senate's decision to assign public building plots primarily by way of heritable building rights."

The cooperatives wanted to buy building plots.
