Sweden's broadband expansion is lagging behind, which risks creating digital divides in society where citizens in sparsely populated areas lack the digital infrastructure required for a modern life.

A new report from the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency shows that both the mobile network and the broadband connection have improved.

But broadband does not reach the government's interim target for 2020, where 95 percent would have had access to fast transmission.

Terese Bengard, operations manager for the organization "All of Sweden should live" believes that the lack of connection is serious.

- If you are in a place that is not connected, it affects your life.

Trying to live in such a place is very difficult, she says in Aktuellt.

Looking towards 2025

Minister for Digitalisation Anders Ygeman (S) shares the picture that Bengard paints and says that it is a failure that they did not reach all the way to last year's intermediate goal.

- I think there are several reasons.

I think there are a number of companies that have promised connection and have not lived up to the promises.

I think there are technicalities around how we set the goal that were unfortunate.

Now we are moving towards the 2025 goal where the goal is for everyone to have access to a fast connection no matter where you live.
