Grünheide (dpa) - The US electric car manufacturer Tesla also wants to quickly start car production with the planned application for a battery factory in Grünheide near Berlin, but is planning a delay.

If the very probable rescheduling of the application for approval of the project should be necessary, it would be “our goal (...) to start production as soon as possible this year,” it said on Wednesday in company circles.

However, Tesla is preparing for a possible delay: The annual report for the first quarter states that the project is on track to begin production and deliveries “late in 2021”.

Tesla originally wanted to start manufacturing electric cars in Grünheide in Brandenburg in July.

Now there is a risk of a later start: According to the State Environment Agency, the application for approval of the project must be publicly interpreted again because Tesla also wants to include the construction and operation of a battery factory in the previous application.

The scope of the amended application is therefore just as unclear as the schedule.

Tesla boss Elon Musk wants to build the world's largest battery factory in Grünheide.

So far, the environmental approval for the car factory by the state of Brandenburg is pending.

Tesla is building there at its own risk through several early approvals.
