Schwalbach (dpa) - The electronics giant Samsung has underpinned its return to the notebook market in Germany with new top models.

At the online event “Samsung Unpacked” on Wednesday, the group presented two new series, the “Galaxy Book Pro” and the “Galaxy Book Pro 360”, which are located at the upper end of the performance spectrum.

Samsung said goodbye to the German market with its notebooks in 2014, referring to “current market needs and requirements”.

At that time, tablet computers such as Apple's iPad were gnawing at the mobile computer market.

In the Corona crisis, however, laptops are in great demand again.

Against this background, Samsung returned to Germany last summer with entry-level models of its notebooks.

In contrast to a number of competitors, Samsung is loyal to the chip company Intel. Intel uses 11th generation systems (Core i5 and Core i7) in the new models. Apple, on the other hand, has said goodbye to the Intel architecture for its new Macs and is building on a chip (M1) developed in-house with the competing ARM architecture. Other Samsung competitors from the Windows camp also rely on semiconductors from Intel competitor AMD.

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 models can also be used as a tablet computer. They also have a foldable screen that can be operated as a touchscreen with your fingers or a special pen. Both the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 will be launched in versions with 13.3 and 15.6 inch displays. Certain models of the Galaxy Book Pro are also offered with LTE cellular communications.

During the corona pandemic, the demand for laptops in Germany has increased noticeably.

On the one hand, the workplaces in the home office fuel sales at Samsung, but also at manufacturers such as Lenovo, Acer and Dell.

In addition, many schools and parents with laptops for home schooling have boosted sales.

In schools, however, Apple and its iPad are used more often than the average, also because the school authorities' tenders are based on the Apple platform.
