Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The so-called epidemic situation in North Rhine-Westphalia is to be extended again by six weeks until mid-June.

The government factions of the CDU and FDP, together with the SPD and the Greens, have submitted a corresponding application to the state parliament.

The current resolution expires on Friday at midnight.

As long as the state parliament determines the epidemic situation as a medical emergency, the government has special powers.

They are set out in the so-called pandemic law, which was passed in a new version a few weeks ago with the support of all parliamentary groups except the AfD.

Among other things, it provides for greater involvement of the state parliament.

In the current application from the CDU, FDP, SPD and Greens, the reason is that the risk situation remains high.

In addition, only just under 25 percent of people in North Rhine-Westphalia are vaccinated at least once.
