After his arrest, Fahmi Reza was investigated for violating insurgency and communication laws.

He faces a prison sentence of up to three years.

"Drastic and uncompromising measures will be taken against anyone who willfully threatens public safety," said a senior police official.

Fahmi Reza appeared in court this Saturday and was initially due to be released during the day.

The artist had already served a month in prison in 2018 after the publication of a comic book.

He represented the then Prime Minister, Najib Razak, in the guise of a clown.

This figure had become a symbol of distrust of the old government.

Human rights defenders denounced the recent implication of Fahmi Reza.

Several associations qualified his arrest as "unjustified, disproportionate and symbolic of the persistent authoritarian reactions of the current government to any form of expression criticizing the leaders".

Many activists are currently worried about freedom of expression in the country.
