Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Roger Lewentz (SPD) has described the decision of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution to monitor extremist sections of the Corona protest movement as "logical".

"It is unacceptable that our basic democratic order and state institutions have been exposed to increasing hostility and attacks since the beginning of the pandemic and that democratic decision-making processes are being made contemptible in a way that poses a threat to our internal security," said Lewentz on Wednesday in Mainz .

The observation is mainly about the protagonists of the lateral thinker movement. Although Rhineland-Palatinate is not a focus of action in the protest scene, such actions can still be identified, so far above all in Kaiserslautern, Mainz and Trier. The number of people who can be assigned to the scene in Rhineland-Palatinate is in the "low three-digit range".

Conspiracy myths such as QAnon or other anti-Semitic resentments are used by parts of the Corona protest movement as well as other stereotypes known from right-wing extremist or Reich citizen and self-governing contexts, said Lewentz.

Conspiracy theories are almost universally ascertainable and have a considerable catalytic effect.

The Internet plays a central role in networking and mobilizing for the corona protests.

"Unfortunately, what I have repeatedly warned about has been confirmed," said Lewentz.

"The attempts by right-wing extremists and Reich citizens to influence the protests in Germany have increased perceptibly, as has the aggressiveness of parts of the demonstration scene."

The protest movement has increased the influx of people such as "Corona deniers and conspiracy fanatics" who question the democratic system as such, but who have not yet been able to attribute any of the known extremist manifestations.
